John H. Hayes and Paul K. Hooker, A New Chronology for the Kings of Israel and Judah and Its Implications for Biblical History and Literature. Atlanta: John Knox Press, 1988 [reprinted: Eugene, OR: Wipf and Stock, 2007].
This new attempt to interpret [“the mysterious numbers of the Hebrew kings”] in terms of absolute dates shows the clarity and bibliographical knowledge to which readers have become used from Hayes’s earlier work: the clarity is partly due in this case to the fact that the authors reject from the start some of the complicated devices favoured by other scholars, such as co-regencies, and “ante-dating” in one kingdom and “post-dating” in the other. … Hayes and Hooker believe that the chronological data in Kings are basically reliable, but they, like other scholars, reckon with some errors and some misunderstandings of older sources by the editors. … This is not, therefore, the last word on the subject, and the quest for an exact chronology based on the biblical figures remains, perhaps, in the realm of wishful thinking.
